What Is a Flameproofing Certificate?
A flameproofing certificate (or flame retardant compliance certificate) is a formal written document confirming that the drapery, curtains, decorative fabrics, artificial plants and other combustible decorations in a property have been treated with — or are inherently — flame retardant to NFPA 701 standards. The certificate names the property, lists items treated, identifies the product applied, names the certifying technician, and carries a validity expiration date.
It is the document Toronto Fire Services, Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services and every other GTA fire department specifically requests during inspections. It is not a hangtag, not a brochure, not a verbal assurance — it is a signed paper document on professional letterhead.
Who Legally Needs One in Ontario?
The Ontario Fire Code (O.
