Top 25 Questions
What is flameproofing? +
Flameproofing is the professional application of a flame retardant chemical treatment to drapery, curtains, decorative textiles, artificial plants and other combustible decorations. Treated materials self-extinguish within 2 seconds of flame source removal, meeting NFPA 701 fire safety standards.
Is flameproofing legally required in Toronto? +
Yes. The Ontario Fire Code (O. Reg. 213/07, Section 2.3) requires drapery and decorative materials in places of assembly, hotels, restaurants, theatres, daycares and similar occupancies to be either inherently flame resistant or treated with an approved flame retardant.
What does NFPA 701 mean? +
NFPA 701 is the National Fire Protection Association's standard test for flame propagation of textiles. It is the test Ontario fire inspectors reference for compliance. Pass criteria include after-flame time under 2 seconds and damaged length under 6.5 inches.
How long does flameproofing last? +
Most professional NFPA 701 treatments are valid for 2-3 years. Heavy-use stage curtains, drapery exposed to humidity, or items cleaned frequently may need yearly re-treatment.
Do you provide a written certificate? +
Yes — every flameproofing treatment includes a written NFPA 701 compliance certificate listing property address, items treated, product applied, validity expiration, technician signature and unique certificate number.
Can you do same-day emergency service? +
Yes. Call (416) 845-3473 for same-day Toronto and GTA dispatch. Treatment dries within 4 hours and the certificate is hand-delivered same-day.
What fabrics can be flameproofed? +
Virtually all natural and synthetic textiles: cotton, linen, silk, velvet, polyester, nylon, acrylic, jute and burlap. We also treat artificial plants, plastic decorations, wood (penetrating treatment), and decorative paper.
Will flame retardant treatment damage my fabric? +
When properly applied, modern NFPA 701 treatments do not stain, discolour or stiffen fabrics. We test inconspicuous areas first on sensitive materials and recommend alternative products if staining risk exists.
How much does flameproofing cost in Toronto? +
Commercial flameproofing typically ranges $400-$3000 depending on size. Standalone certificate verification (already-treated or inherently FR fabric) starts around $200. Free onsite quotes always.
Do you service residential customers? +
Yes — we offer residential drapery cleaning, blind cleaning, carpet cleaning and area rug cleaning. Residential flameproofing is also available though less commonly required.
Do you work with insurance companies? +
Yes. We provide direct invoicing for fire/flood restoration projects to most major Canadian insurance companies including Intact, Aviva, Wawanesa, Allstate, Definity, Co-operators, TD and Travelers.
Are you Hunter Douglas certified? +
Yes — we are an authorized Hunter Douglas cleaning provider with warranty-safe ultrasonic cleaning for Silhouette, Luminette, Duette, Pirouette and the full Hunter Douglas product range.
What is the difference between flameproofing and fire-retardant cleaning? +
Flameproofing is the treatment step (applying flame retardant chemistry to fabrics). Fire-retardant cleaning is general cleaning of fabrics that already are or will be flame retardant. We do both — often in one visit for commercial venues.
Can artificial plants in my restaurant fail a fire inspection? +
Yes — artificial plants are the #1 inspection-fail item in Toronto restaurants and event venues. They must be NFPA 701 treated or replaced with inherently FR alternatives.
Do hotel guest room drapes need NFPA 701 documentation? +
Yes. Every guest room drape in every hotel needs treatment documentation. Spot inspections of randomly selected guest rooms are common during compliance audits.
What if I have a Ontario daycare licence renewal coming up? +
Ontario Ministry of Education licensing audits verify NFPA 701 compliance for daycare curtains, decorations, costumes and fabrics. See our daycare flameproofing page for the full requirements and process.
Can stage curtains be treated without removing them? +
Yes — most stage curtain treatment is done in place during off-show windows. We work around production schedules including overnight treatment between performances.
Do you offer rolling treatment programs for venues? +
Yes. Many hotels, banquet hall networks and theatre venues use scheduled annual or biennial treatment cycles with us. We send written reminders, coordinate around operations, and maintain centralized certificate archives.
How quickly does the treatment dry? +
Most flame retardant treatments dry to touch within 2 hours and are fully cured within 4-6 hours. Items are usable the same day in most cases.
Is the flame retardant chemistry safe? +
We use NFPA 701-tested products approved for use in childcare, healthcare and food-service environments. Products are odourless when dry, non-leaching and bound to fibres rather than free chemicals. Product safety data sheets are available on request.
What payment methods do you accept? +
Credit cards, e-Transfer, cheque and direct billing for commercial accounts. Insurance claim invoicing is available for restoration projects.
Do you offer multi-property discounts? +
Yes — daycare networks, hotel chains, restaurant groups and multi-venue operators receive bulk pricing across locations with centralized billing options.
Can you handle high ceilings and difficult installations? +
Yes — we carry ladders to 24 feet and have access to lift equipment for taller installations. Vaulted ceilings, multi-story windows and lobby installations are routine.
Do you service all GTA cities? +
Yes — 19 GTA cities: Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, Newmarket, Aurora, Milton and Hamilton.
How do I get a quote? +
Call (416) 845-3473 or use the form on any page. Most quotes are completed by phone within minutes; large or complex installations get free onsite inspection within 1-2 business days.
