What Is Flameproofing, And Why Toronto Venues Need It
Flameproofing is the application of a Health Canada-approved flame retardant chemical to drapery, curtains, decorative fabrics, artificial plants and other combustible decorations. Treated textiles self-extinguish when an ignition source is removed, dramatically slowing fire spread in commercial occupancies.
Ontario Fire Code (O. Reg. 213/07) requires flame retardant treatment for textiles in hotels, restaurants, theatres, banquet halls, schools, daycares and most other places of assembly. NFPA 701 is the recognized test standard, and inspectors will specifically ask for a current NFPA 701 compliance certificate.
Fines for non-compliance can reach $25,000 per violation, plus immediate venue closure until compliance is restored. Most treatments last 2-3 years before re-application is required.
