Drapery is a long-term investment — when cleaned and maintained properly, premium silk, velvet and linen drapery lasts 20+ years. When neglected, fibres weaken, colours fade, and decorative installations need full replacement at significant cost. FlameShield Toronto offers premium drapery cleaning across Toronto and the GTA, using fabric-appropriate processes that protect your investment.

Two Cleaning Methods

Onsite cleaning — our preferred method for most drapery. A low-moisture solvent system removes embedded dust, smoke residue, kitchen aerosols and surface staining without taking drapes down. No shrinkage risk, no re-installation, drapes usable within 2-3 hours.

Take-down cleaning — for heavily soiled drapery, fire/smoke restoration, vintage velvet, or interlined silk. We remove, transport to our facility, clean using fabric-specific processes, press, and re-hang. Typical turnaround: 3-5 business days.

Fabrics We Clean

  • Silk (raw silk, dupioni, taffeta, charmeuse)
  • Velvet (cotton velvet, silk velvet, mohair velvet, crushed velvet)
  • Linen (pure linen, linen blends, semi-sheer linen)
  • Polyester and synthetic blends (most modern drapery)
  • Cotton and cotton blends (rod-pocket and pinch-pleat)
  • Wool and wool-blend drapery
  • Decorative trims and tassels (cleaned separately)

Combined Cleaning + Flameproofing

For commercial venues, we strongly recommend combining drapery cleaning with NFPA 701 flameproofing in a single visit. Flame retardant bonds best to fully clean fibres, and the inspection certificate is issued same-day. Combined treatment typically extends both cleaning intervals and flameproofing validity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you clean drapes onsite or take them down? +
Both methods are available depending on fabric, condition and location. Most modern drapery can be cleaned in place using our specialized low-moisture process. Heavily soiled silk, vintage velvet or lined drapery is best taken down and cleaned at our facility. We always recommend during the free inspection.
Will cleaning shrink my drapes? +
Properly executed professional drapery cleaning should not cause measurable shrinkage. Our onsite process avoids the heat and moisture that cause shrinkage in dry cleaning. For taken-down items, we use temperature- and humidity-controlled cleaning. We measure before and after as a guarantee.
How often should drapes be cleaned? +
Residential drapery: every 2-3 years. Restaurant and hospitality drapery: annually (or every 6 months for high-volume venues). Theatre stage curtains: at minimum annually due to dust and dressing-room contamination. Drapery cleaned every year typically lasts 3-5 times longer than uncleaned drapery.
Can drapery be cleaned and flameproofed in one visit? +
Yes — and it's our most popular combined service for commercial venues. We clean first, then apply NFPA 701 flame retardant treatment to fully clean fibres for maximum bond and longevity. The compliance certificate is issued the same day.
How long does drapery cleaning take? +
Onsite cleaning typically takes 2-4 hours for a residential home. Commercial venues with extensive drapery installations are usually completed in one working day. Drapes are usable within 2-3 hours of cleaning completion.
